JWC 1+2

Concept

This chair consists exclusively of wood, without glue. The joints are made with a new wood-joining technique known as the “rotation dowel welding” technique. The heat generated by inserting the dowels releases adhesives present in the wood itself – lignin and hemicellulose – forming a solid welded bond in seconds. The new kind of chair was produced in association with Sebastian Kraft from the Wood Division of the Bern University of Applied Sciences in Biel/Bienne (BFH – AHB), and specifically designed with this particular technique in mind. The characteristic features of the JWC lounge chair are the overlaps required for the welded bonds and the wing-like construction.

An evolution of the chair made solely from wood, the Just Wood Chair 2 is a refinement of the world’s first exclusively wood chair using an applied wood-joining technique, obviating the need for glue to assemble it. The heat generated by inserting the dowels releases adhesives present in the wood itself – lignin and hemicellulose – forming a solid welded bond in seconds. The constructive design of JWC2 plays with separations and connections, formal amalgamation as well as a chequered design. Up to four of the chairs can be stacked together.
